Neighbours' History

Neighbours Regional Association was created by the English Speaking Community on June 8th, 2003. It was decided at the Annual General Meeting of Alliance Quebec
Rouyn-Noranda Chapter in 2002 that a new independent organization needed to be formed.

This new organization would be locally governed and would more accurately meet the needs of the English Speaking Population of Rouyn-Noranda.

The organization was incorporated on April 15th, 2004. We have gone from 120 members with Alliance Quebec to well over 300 paying members today. We represent the whole English Community of Rouyn-Noranda which currently sits at approximately 1400 persons.

The English Speaking Community of Rouyn-Noranda gave the organization a clear mandate described in our Mission Statement and 6 objectives.

As you are aware, Rouyn-Noranda is 96% French speaking and only 4% English. This leaves our community under the threshold of “numbers warranting”, hence there are many many services which are no longer available to English speaking citizens
of Rouyn-Noranda. Some major examples: health services (short term and long), municipal affairs (public works, taxes, etc), economic development (emploi quebec, CLD, SADC, etc), some social examples would be: no English books, entertainment, etc)
Over the last 15 years we have been able to make wonderful strides for the vitality of the English Community.  We host a wide range of activities to fill the needs of this community.

We have socials (comedy, live theatre, community meals, etc), we organize workshops (computers for seniors, managing your stress, dealing with loss, etc), we work extremely hard in the Health and Education Sectors.
But most importantly we provide a place, a voice and a vision for the English Community that is rooted in Rouyn-Noranda.
